Centro Hospitalar de Leiria (Leiria Hospital Centre) was formed by the merger of the unit with Hospital Distrital de Pombal (Pombal District Hospital) in 2011 and Hospital de Alcobaça Bernardino Lopes de Oliveira (Alcobaça Bernardino Lopes de Oliveira Hospital) in 2013. The areas served include the following municipalities: Alcobaça (excluding the parishes of Alfeizerão, Benedita and São Martinho do Porto), Alvaiázere, Ansião, Batalha, Leiria, Marinha Grande, Nazaré, Pombal and Porto de Mós. Parts of the municipalities of Castanheira de Pêra, Figueiró dos Vinhos, Ourém, Pedrógão Grande and Soure are also covered. The hospital serves around 400,000 residents. CHL has one of the best levels of economic and financial sustainability among public health institutions, which has made it possible to implement its strategic plan for growth and distinction. In recent years, its care has grown positively thanks to significant investment in facilities, equipment, training, changes to procedures and redesigned processes. It has become a more efficient organisation and has achieved gains in health. Accessibility, quality, effectiveness, efficiency and responsibility are terms that have long been part of the vocabulary of our managers and staff.
