Mongolia
Country: Mongolia is a nation bordered by China and Russia. It’s known for vast, rugged expanses and nomadic culture. Its capital, Ulaan Baatar, centers around Chinggis Khaan (Genghis Khan) Square. Its population is approximately 3 million and the primary language is Mongolian.

To access emergency services: Dial 103

Currency: Mongolian tögrög (MNT)

Recommended immunizations and vaccines for travelers:  Before traveling to Mongolia, ask your doctor what vaccines are recommended. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the World Health Organization (WHO) are excellent resources as well.

Insurance: Find out in advance if your insurance plan will make payments directly to providers or reimburse you later for overseas health expend¬itures.
It is also worth ensuring your travel insurance will cover ambulances or transport either home or to more advanced medical facilities, if needed. Not all insurance covers emergency medical evacu¬ation home or to a hospital in a major city, which may be the only way to receive medical attention in a serious emergency.

What to expect in a Mongolian hospital: Healthcare facilities available to foreigners are limited. All Mongolian hospitals are short of most medical supplies, including basic care items, drugs and spare parts for medical equipment. Most doctors and hospitals expect immediate cash payment for health services.

The greatest issue facing residents in Mongolia is the nation's vast landscape and infrastructure. While expats living in Ulan Bator will find it easy and convenient to find the medical attention that they need, it's more difficult to treat patients in more rural areas, especially in emergency situations. Critical injuries or illnesses, in either rural or urban areas, may require evacuation, so be sure that your medical insurance covers such instances.

Contact your embassy/consulate: When in doubt, your country’s embassy is a good resource to turn to for medical assistance guidance.
